The Trip Experience...
"It is day twelve on the Appalachian Trail. The wind blows lightly across the sleeping tarps and I can hear the small spring gush over pebbles and rocks. Three more days to go until we get picked up at Reeds Gap. My two partners have hit the sack. The black sky sprinkled with stars has never looked so vast to me. I 'm learning a lot about myself and my group out here. I am alone sitting around the campfire scribbling in this log in the fading light of my head-lamp's dying batteries. I smile watching the flames casting shadows upon my "den" of twelve content boys. I am filled with pride as I reflect upon the determination and closeness of my group. We have struggled together going over mountains, in group meetings, and through the elements. I feel tired. My muscles are burning, yet I feel strong and invigorated. Today was a tough climb over some ridges, but we did it! I remain inspired when I see some of these little guys stand on top of these mountains. They look sincerely happy. There are those that are having more problems and have pushed my patience to the limits but I hang in there, all the effort will pay off later. I always remind myself that it's the harder ones that I feel a little closer to when they leave. I guess it's all the times that we struggle, my relationship with them just gets stronger. Wow, we are all doing this. It has been incredibly fun and unforgettable. I almost don't want to go back to campus but I gotta admit I can't wait to go the buffet in town, get a long hot shower, and see my friends back at school. For now, I'm signing off. We hike ten miles tomorrow and I'm in charge of helping the kids make breakfast."
